Frequently Asked Questions

What is the BCE Read-a-thon?

The BCE Read-a-thon is similar in concept to a walk-a-thon, but instead of exercising their bodies by tracking how much they walk, our students will be exercising their brains by tracking how much they read. This fundraiser for our schools involves no selling of products, only donations from friends and family to support the sponsored child’s efforts.

Why a Read-a-thon?

The annual Read-a-thon is our way of supporting the BCE annual grant to the Burlingame School District by generating 100% profit through collection of sponsorships. Successful fundraising events and donations help BCE provide the school district with the financial resources to create a rich and inspiring education for our children beyond what is possible with public funds.

How does the Read-a-thon work?

Create your child’s personal fundraising page and send emails to family and friends to obtain sponsors. Starting Monday, January 24 through Friday, January 28, read, read, read!! All contributions must be recorded by January 31st to be eligible for the grand prize drawing.

How do you track minutes?

The official minute tracker will be available by January 24. Use this tracker during reading days (January 24-28) to keep track of the minutes your child reads. Parents may read to children in grades PreK-2nd. Everything your child reads outside of the classroom counts! Minutes should be recorded by 10pm pacific time on Friday, January 28th.

What counts as reading?

Students can choose whatever they want to read. They can read books, e-books, poetry, comics, magazines, audiobooks – anything goes! They are not being assessed, it’s all about reading for fun, building a love of reading, and supporting Burlingame schools.

Don’t know what to read?

Ask friends for their favorite book titles, do a web search on recommended books for your grade level, or check out Storyline Online, the SAG-AFTRA Foundation’s award-winning children’s literacy website, streaming videos featuring celebrated actors reading children’s books alongside creatively produced illustrations.

All proceeds from the 2022 BCE Read-a-thon go to BCE to help provide the education our kids deserve.
